WELCOME TO

BIODEC IDAH

Biotechnology Research, Development and Innovations

Center Overview

First started as a satellite Centre under BIODEC Isanlu, Kogi State in 2015. By 2016, approval was given for the Centre to operate as a full fledge “Aquatic Bioresources Training Centre, Idah” Our strategic area of focus is Research and Development into Aquaculture sector.

Our Vision

To be a leading center of excellence in biotechnology research and innovation, transforming scientific ideas into sustainable national and global solutions.

Our Mission

To advance biotechnology research, promote innovation, and deliver sustainable technologies that improve the quality of life, ensure food and health security, and protect the environment.

Our Approach

We employ a multidisciplinary approach that integrates molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and computational sciences. Our laboratories are equipped with modern facilities for experimental research, pilot production, and field testing.

ABOUT US

BIODEC IDAH

The Centre is situated between Uwowo and Ogbogbo communities in Igalamela-Odulu Local Government Area of Kogi State. About 53 hectares of land was allocated to the Centre by the two communities. All necessary documents (Deed of Gift, Certificate of Occupancy, Land Survey, Site Plan has been processed and Soil Analysis conducted) and all documented. The Centre currently has 76 staff officers( Scientific and Administration  Officers) and five (5) casual staff. The Centre currently operates nine (9) administration departments and six (6) technical departments.

Administrative building (phase I) has been completed and put to use. Training hall has also been completed and put to use. Snailry house completed as well and currently in use. Two functional boreholes with one overhead tank.

Center Objectives

Identify, classify and document all bioresources (emphasis on aquatic bioreources) in Kogi State

Promote and collaborate in bioresources development with private and public sectors, researchers, industry and academia.

Identify through workshops, seminars and conferences, indigenous knowledge in bioresources.

Take inventory and develop a databank of bioresources in Kogi State to generate and disseminate needed information for decision making to all stake holders.

Develop a Bioresources Park

Make the Centre a hub of scientific and agricultural activities.

Provide laboratory and other technical services to fish farmers, industries and others concerned with fresh fisheries problems.

Training of the Centre experts in bioresources development & Improvement in aquacultural activities among fishing communities and fish farmers.

Center Research Capacity

A high – tech fingerling production equipment with a capacity to produce 500,000 fingerlings/batch = 3 million fingerlings/year were imported and has been in the Centre since 2018.

This is a world- class recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), equipped with all the filtration, aeration oxygenation, sterilisation and decarbonising units waiting to be installed.

A 500 kg/hr. fish feed extruder line with all the machinery comprising the grinder, mixer, preconditioner extruder, cutter, dryer, cooler, packaging machine and a boiler have been procured  and are all in the premises of the Centre.

Again they have not yet been installed.

The Centre has a total land area of 54 hectares fully secured with all relevant documents.

We have scientists and technical staff (B.SC, M.SC and HND) but none of the staff officers has the needed skills or the technical know-how to operate the equipment as such there is need for training and capacity building.
