Biotechnology Research, Development and Innovations

Center Overview

Bioresources development Centre, Ilesha Osun was established under the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) now National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA), Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology in 2019. The centre is dedicated to harnessing, developing, and promoting Nigeria’s vast bioresources for sustainable economic growth, technological advancement, and improved quality of life

ABOUT US

BIODEC ILESHA

Located in Ilesha, Osun State, BIODEC serves as a hub for research, training and innovation in biotechnology and bioresources management. Its mandate is to explore the rich biodiversity of the region and beyond, transforming them into value-added products and services for agriculture, health, industry and environmental sustainability for national growth. Its activities cover agricultural biotechnology, livestock development, medicinal plants research, environmental management and bio-enterprise promotion.

To conduct research and development in bioresources and biotechnology, To provide capacity building and training for students, farmers and entrepreneurs, To support innovation and enterprise development, To engage with communities to promote food security, health and sustainable livelihoods

Center Objectives

Conducting applied and adaptive research in biotechnology and bioresources utilization.

Training students, researchers, farmers and entrepreneurs in modern biotechnological techniques

Supporting local communities with bio-based solution to enhance food security, healthcare, and income generation

Promoting biotechnological innovations and fostering small and medium-scale enterprise through value chain development

 

  • To preserve and provide biological resources for scientific, industrial, agricultural, environmental and medical R&D and their applications
  • To use the indigenous bioresource materials to support R&D activities for preservation of the nation’s ecological biodiversity
  • To promote technologies and database to achieve best practices in development of indigenous bioresources
  • To establish biorepositories for developed bioresources for protection of intellectual property rights
  • To popularize the developed bio-enterprises and bio-products for public information and policy formulation to encourage commercial production
  • To provide bioentrepreneurship, agronomic, agribusiness, and biotechnology training and services to existing and prospective farmers.
  • To disseminate proven indigenous and modern biotechnologies for the use of farmers and rural dwellers.
  • To evaluate and screen crop cultivars for possible traits of interests.
  • To carry out R&D on bioresoiurces of interest for use at the grassroot.
