We’re Full Fledged Biotechnology Agency Creating Awesome Things

In recognition of the importance of biotechnology to national development, the Federal Executive Council on 23rd of April 2001 approved the National Biotechnology Policy, which led to the establishment of the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) in November 2001 under the supervision of Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The act that establishes NABDA referred to as National Biotechnology Development Agency (Establishment) Act, 2022 mandated the Agency to carry out Research and Development programmes on biotechnology priority areas of food, agriculture, health, industry, environment and other strategic sectors for national biotechnology utilization in Nigeria as well as promote, co-ordinate and deploy cutting edge biotechnology research and development activities nationwide.

What We Provide

Research & Development (R&D)

  • Conduct biotech R&D in priority sectors: food & agriculture, health, industry, environment, etc.
  • Develop policies and programmes to guide use of biotechnology in Nigeria.

Promotion of Biotechnology

  •  Promote sustainable adoption and application of biotech technologies that are acceptable, profitable and safe.
  • Encourage self-reliance in the biotech sector, reducing import dependence.

Training & Capacity Building

  • Build capacity of scientists, technologists, staff in biotechnology tools and methods.
  •  Workshops, seminars, conferences for awareness.

Environmental Biotechnology

  • Deployment of Bioremediation technique: cleaning up polluted sites, reuse / treatment of waste.
  • Conservation of biodiversity; bioresource‐banking; DNA barcoding; microbial culture banks.

  • Training youths, women, and other entrepreneurs with skills in agriculture, aquaculture, bio-based processes.

Medical Biotechnology Services to hospitals, Pharma/Biotech industries, laboratories etc

  • Development, deployment and commercialization  of diagnostic tools (molecular diagnostics) for infectious and non-infectious diseases.
  • Development and commercialization  of  Vaccine,, antibodies, biopharmaceutical  (e.g. insulin, antiretrovirals)  products.
  • Forensic DNA services / human identification.
  • Detection of pathogens via genome sequencing, real-time PCR, ELISA, cytoflourimetric analysis/cell sorting

Agricultural Biotechnology services to Farmers and general public

  • Development  and deployment of Improved crop varieties (e.g. pest resistant, drought tolerant)  .
